Definition of Natural Hygiene

December 19, 2008

Most are no doubt familiar with these definitions, yet here they
are for reminder & clarity.
1949 definition by Shelton in his Hygienic Review.
"Hygiene is that branch of biology which investigates and applies the
conditions upon which life & health depend, & the means by which
health is sustained in all its virtue & purity, & restored when it
has been lost. Hygiene is not a system of therapeutics. It
professes to build health in all forms of diseased states by the
employment of hygienic agents alone & without the employment of
poisons or resort to enervating palliatives of any nature.
Constructive surgery forms the only non-hygienic measure ever
endorsed by the natural hygienist."

"A true hygiene is not empirical, but rests upon the immutable &
unchanging laws of nature. All real science comes from rocognition
of the laws of nature. These are the principles which embody all
truth & whose proper arrangement into a system constitutes all
science, & art is but the application of these truths to uses, to the
production of the desired results."

"The laws of nature, the truths of the universe, the principles of
science, are just as certain, as fixed & immutable in their relations
to human organization, in relation to life, in relation to health, in
relation to happiness, in relation to disease, as they are in
relation to all things else."

The 14 necessities of life - food, air, water, sunlight, rest,
sleep, relaxation, exercise, play, warmth, cleanliness, hope, faith,
courage, & the means of securing these; are the actual class of
hygienic agencies.
"It is indeed no small task to eradicate from society the
accumulated errors of three thousand years; to convince the people of
the utter fallacy of the popular medical system; to explode all of
its false philosohy; to clear the ground of the rubbish of the ages,
& build up a new, a different, an independent medical science &
healing art. But it must be done. It will be done."

"Obliterate these false doctrines of cure & immunization from
medical schools, & books, teach the people the simple truth in
relation to the nature of disease, the 'modus operandi' of so
called remedies, & the theory of stimulation, & we shall have gone a
long way towards the physical regeneration of the people."

"I am well aware of the revolutionary character of the priniciples
I have presented. I know that their acceptance by the public will
work great changes, not only in the care of the sick & in the
prevention of disease, but in many other fields of modern activity,
but I am convinced that the physical salvation of our race depends
upon their acceptance."

Natural Hygiene Science, by Robert Walker, MD, 1894, follows;
"It cures sick people by removing the cause of sickness.
It removes the disease by removing the neccsity for it.
It believes nature is right, & hence does not seek to thwart her
operations.
It declares that disease is a natural process of purification, &
should not be stopped, but aided.
Its remedies are nature's health preservatives. Obedience to nature
is its greatest panacea. Air, light, food, water, exercise, rest,
sleep, etc., in such manner & degree as nature can use are its
curatives. Remove the cause, & the effect will cease, is Hygienic
Science."

Dr Shelton lectured in nearly every state in the Union. His books
sold millions of copies. Over 250,000 of: Fasting Can Save Your
Life, alone. Many of his original titles are now out of print & have
become collector items. Soilandhealth. org has done what it can to
help preserve NH literature. INHS has good records as well. It is
time to link-up with wikipedia & others in respect to the blossoming
NH awareness that is currently underway.
